CE-SSD-X1: a custom-shape SSD.

An NVMe drive on a 28 × 62 mm board of our own shape, on the standard M.2 edge, with an anodised aluminium heatsink made for it. Board, routing, heatsink, renders and film were all done by the CE Design agents in one evening.

Where it stands: a concept design, not a tested product. The board is routed and passes KiCad's design-rule check; the controller pin map is a placeholder until a controller vendor shares its reference design.

What is in it

The black SSD board with its controller and two NAND packages, gold M.2 contacts
The board. Controller, two NAND packages, power stage and the gold M.2 M-key contacts, six copper layers, 0.8 mm thick as M.2 requires.
The anodised heatsink sliding over the board
The heatsink. Aluminium 6063, nine fins, shaped to the board outline, open at the contacts so the drive still plugs into any M.2 socket built for its shape.
Low angle of the finished drive showing the fins and side etch
Finished. Three finishes in the 3D page: silver, graphite and black.

The engineering

InterfacePCIe ×4 NVMe: 9 differential pairs (4 lanes transmit and receive, plus reference clock) routed on the top layer, length-matched to 0 mm skew
Signal integrity0.15 mm traces, 0.127 mm gap: 85.6 Ω differential over a ground plane (IPC-2141 estimate on the fab's published 6-layer stackup), AC-coupling capacitors on the four transmit pairs
Board28 × 62 mm custom outline, M.2 M-key edge with the real key notch, 6 layers
CheckedKiCad design-rule check: 0 errors
HeatsinkParametric CAD, 30.4 × 57.7 × 10.0 mm, 17.1 g in AL6063, STEP and STL exported
